Calendula's Garden

Hi Reader,

There’s something magical about the energy of a new year. January always feels like a clean slate, especially in the garden.

It’s the perfect time to dream, plan, and organize for the growing season ahead. With a recent back injury, I’ve been leaning on our indoor garden more than ever, and I’m loving the fresh herbs we’re growing.

This year, Mark and I are thrilled to finally start our bird lists while AZ hosts many migratory birds, starting with the feathered friends in our backyard. It’s given us even more inspiration to expand our perennial wildlife garden.

Back when we lived in the PNW, we set up a hoophouse for winter gardening, which doubled as a cozy spot to enjoy the view. Those memories remind us how rewarding it is to embrace the garden year-round.

As you dive into your own garden plans, we’ve gathered some tips and articles to help you make the most of this season. Let’s dig in!

January Tips

Start Indoor Seedlings for Early Crops: Begin growing cold-hardy vegetables like lettuce, kale, and spinach indoors to get a head start.

Set Up A Worm Compost Bin: These bins can be moved outside when it warms up. Worm castings are one of the best natural plant fertilizers.

Set Up a Bird Feeding Station: Help local wildlife by providing food and water for birds during the colder months.

Make Your Own Natural Cleaning Products: Create inexpensive, effective, eco-friendly cleaners using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils

Plan a Winter Stargazing Night: January’s crisp, clear skies are perfect for stargazing. Bundle up, stay warm with these heaters, and enjoy the constellations
